According to reports on BoxofficeIndia.com, the film earned an estimated Rs 1.1 crore to Rs 1.2 crore nett on its opening day. Although lower than the collection a big-ticket film would normally collect, it has still garnered the best response from the audience amidst an ongoing COVID-19 threat.
With business down around 60-70% from pre-covid times, trade experts noted even lower footfalls of up to 90% in regions with other releases thus far.
Although the turnout was not so strong on day 1, it was reported that half of the collections from the first day was acquired through advance bookings. There were many shows which had a turnout of 100 plus people with some IMAX screenings getting to the capacity which is permitted now.
India is among the last countries where ‘Tenet’ has released, owing to the closure of cinemas. The film premiered in the UK on August 26 and the US on September 3. It was appreciated by the critics and surpassed general expectations as far as the opening weekend predictions were concerned.
The film’s box-office performance early this year reportedly forced other Hollywood biggies like ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, the Bond thriller ‘No Time To Die’, Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ to push their releases.
Nolan’s new film is a spy action thriller that takes one on a time-bending mission with two secret agents, essayed by Pattinson and Washington. The film that also stars features Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Michael Caine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Clemence Poesy was shot across seven countries — US, UK, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Norway and India. Some sequences of the film were shot in locations around south-Mumbai in 2019.
Following the film’s release, the filmmaker penned a note of love and appreciation for his leading lady, Dimple Kapadia that was shared online by her doting son-in-law Akshay Kumar.
The note read, “Dimple, What can I say? Working with you has been a delight! Watching you bring Priya to life all around the world has been fantastic. Thank you for your great skill and hard work, and for lending your talent to ‘Tenet’. Best wishes.”
Sharing the note, Akshay wrote: “Here’s my proud son-in-law moment! #ChristopherNolan pens a heartfelt note to #DimpleKapadia on the eve of their release. Had I been in her place, I wouldn’t have been able to move in awe but having watched her on-screen working her magic in #Tenet, I couldn’t be more happy and proud of Ma.”
The actor also posted a photo of Dimple and Nolan together.
The movie also happens to be Nolan’s first film since his 2017 Oscar-nominated war drama ‘Dunkirk’.
