CHENNAI: All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) new academic calendar for the year 2021-22 sets August 31 as the last date for completing the first round of engineering counselling. The academic calendar has surprised the colleges and experts as several boards have postponed the Class XII board exam in view of the Covid-19 second wave in the country.

According to the academic calendar, the last date to conduct the second round of counselling is September 9 and the last date for commencement of classes for first-year students is September 15.

Even if the board exams are conducted in June, it would take at least two months to declare the results, calling for applications, and conduct the counselling for engineering seats, experts said. They said it is not possible to adhere to the present academic calendar.

Career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi said the entire academic year might get postponed due to the pandemic.

“Even last year, they have to change the academic calendar many times. They should have waited for the situation to come under control and completion of the exams. Still, there is no clarity on when the exams will be conducted, how answer scripts will be evaluated. AICTE should have released the academic calendar during the Class XII examination,” he added.

Last year, the council gave time till November 30 to complete the counselling due to the pandemic.

A private college principal said the present schedule was prepared without keeping the pandemic in mind. “They have issued their regular academic calendar for admissions. Given the current situation, they may have to revise it many times,” he said. However, the council extended the last date for the grant of affiliation by the university till July 15. As per the usual schedule, the universities need to give affiliation by May 15.

“The university has announced that it would conduct a physical inspection of colleges before granting affiliation for 2021-22. As of now, there is no change in the decision,” sources from the university said.

More than 500 colleges have applied for affiliation with the Anna University for 2021-22.
