LUCKNOW: The urban local body elections in the state, being viewed as the semi-final before the big poll battle in 2024, would be held in two phases on May 4 and 11. The counting of votes would be done on May 13.
Issuing the notification for the polls, state election commissioner Manoj Kumar said that the model code of conduct (MCC) has come into effect immediately.
In all, 17 municipal corporations, 199 municipal councils and 439 nagar panchayats would elect their new representatives. The number of urban bodies has gone up by 107 — from 653 to 760 — this time, said the SEC.
Lucknow city and the entire would be voting in the first phase on May 4, along with eight other divisions — Saharanpur, Moradabad, Agra, Jhansi, Prayagraj, Devipatan, Gorakhpur and Varanasi.
Nine other divisions — Meerut, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Chitrakoot, Ayodhya, Basti, Azamgarh and Mirzapur would be voting in the second phase on May 11.
The urban body polls in the state were due early this year, but the Allahabad high court nixed the caste reservation list issued by the government on the pretext that the triple test formula for fixing the OBC quota was not followed.
The HC asked the state government to go ahead with the poll without the OBC quota. The government moved the apex court against this order which asked it to set up a dedicated commission to decide the OBC quota.
On March 27, the SC paved the way for holding the urban local body polls as it allowed the State Election Commission to issue a notification in this regard in two days with an OBC quota in terms of a report of the Uttar Pradesh Backward Classes Commission.
