PATIALA/AMRITSAR: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is set to be released from the Patiala Central Jail on Saturday, less than two months short of the completion of his one-year sentence. There was no official confirmation on this but a tweet from the former Punjab Congress president’s handle on Friday said: “This is to inform everyone that Sardar Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala Jail tomorrow. (As informed by the concerned authorities)”.
Sidhu’s counsel H P S Verma maintained that the former MP and MLA, convicted by the Supreme Court of “voluntarily causing hurt” and handed a one-year term in a 1988 road rage case that led to a 65-year-old man’s death, “is most likely” to be freed during the weekend. However, jail superintendent M S Tiwana refused to confirm as much, saying: “We haven’t received any order so far regarding this matter.”
Congress’s Lal Singh, who met Sidhu on Friday along with Mohinder Singh Kaypee, echoed Verma. “He’ll be released by Saturday,” he said.
Sidhu was earlier expected to be released under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in January, but the state government had denied his remission of sentence.
Former Patiala Congress president Narinder Verma Lali, who was expelled from the party in October for six years by PCC chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, said: “We have made preparations to welcome to Sidhu.”
Party’s Patiala district president Naresh Duggal, who was appointed by Warring, said: “So far, we have not got any message from the party high command in Punjab, regarding Sidhu’s release.”
However, Congressmen in Amritsar have made preparations to visit Patiala to receive Sidhu on his release. Former MLA Sunil Dutti said a large number of Congress leaders from the Majha region of Punjab “are taking a cavalcade of hundreds of vehicles to receive our leader”.
Dutti said Sidhu would first go to his home in Patiala and then visit Amritsar in a day or two. Another Congress leader said a roadmap has already been prepared for Sidhu and he is likely to be given a major responsibility to strengthen the party.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media in Chandigarh, minister Aman Arora said the case was not on the agenda of cabinet meeting on Friday. He said Sidhu would be released if his jail term was getting over on April 1. He said certain other cases for remission were taken up in the cabinet and except for two persons convicted for heinous crimes, the others were approved as per the laid down policy.
