Bjp: Now, BJP takes leaf out of US primaries to pick nominees | India News – Times of India

BENGALURU: From subtle push to presidential style poll campaigning, BJP has taken a step forward and adopted the US presidential election model of conducting primaries to select candidates for Karnataka assembly polls.
Rolling out an elaborate selection process at the constituency level, the party on Friday held elections to draw up a list of three possible candidates for each of the 224 assembly seats. “Like primaries in the US, voters here were officebearers of the party unit in each seat,” said Nirmal Kumar Surana, state BJP vice-president. “The idea is to give party workers at the grassroots a say in the matter and to ensure there is consensus among stakeholders on candidates. It will also quell possible dissidence.”
Two senior members were deployed in each constituency as observers to oversee polling. On an average, 150 party members voted in each constituency. The president and members of mandal committees (constituency block) and members of constituency units of the party’s seven morchas or wings – women, SC, ST, OBC, youth, farmers and minorities – were among the voters.
Congress, which came out with its first candidate list even before polls were announced, had experimented with a similar model in 2014 parliamentary polls. This time, it invited applications from ticket aspirants, along with a fee of Rs 2 lakh.
BJP ticket aspirants, especially incumbent MLAs, are piqued by the move as there is no clarity on whether sitting legislators would be replaced by new faces. Surana, however, reassured that “sitting MLAs with winning ability need not worry”.
The three shortlisted names for each constituency will be scrutinised by district core committees in presence of representatives on Saturday and Sunday. The state core committee is expected to meet early next week to prepare a list of probables, based on the scrutiny. This list will be sent to the BJP central parliamentary board, which is expected to announce the final list by April 10, said BJP members.
