MEERUT: A day after the roof of a cold storage collapsed in Sambhal, UP, with at least two dozen labourers trapped inside, the toll rose to 14 on Friday. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force pulled out 11 survivors from under the rubble.
Sambhal district magistrate (DM) Manish Bansal said, “Eleven of them were found alive, while one of them succumbed during treatment. The bodies of the victims will be handed over to the families after postmortem exams.”
The DM said that though there are no further claims of missing persons, the rescue operation will continue until all the debris is cleared from the accident site.
An FIR has also been registered against the cold storage owners.
The mishap happened during the overloading of potato sacks onto a rack. All of that came crashing down, bringing the roof along with it. Over two dozen workers were buried under the falling debris and thousands of tonnes of potato sacks.
Till Friday morning, villagers claimed that they heard “voices from the accident site” and then a few more labourers were pulled out from the rubble.
