HYDERABAD: Much before the Telangana high court directed the state government on Wednesday to conduct the Republic Day parade officially, governor Tamilisai Soundararajan took up the matter with the Centre, it is learnt.

Raj Bhavan sources said an upset Tamilisai spoke to the home ministry and pointed out how the state government had told her to hold the Republic Day event separately in Raj Bhavan rather than a public event. Following the high court’s orders, a police parade will be held in Raj Bhavan before unfurling the flag.

Sources said the governor was not only disappointed with the state government’s response asking her to celebrate the event in Raj Bhavan like it was held in 2022 but also with the fact that the government took a long time to get back to her. She had shot off a letter to the state asking for clarification on the January 26 event on November 26, 2022 itself, sources said.
“A single line response from the state government was received after two months on January 21 to celebrate the event in Raj Bhavan only,” sources said. The government had cited Covid-19 outbreak as the reason after it cancelled the official event on January 26, 2022. No specific reason was given for cancelling the event this year before the high court stepped in and asked the government to conduct the parade.
After writing the letter seeking clarity on the event in November, the governor sought a speech copy of Republic Day from the government recently but now will deliver her own speech at the Raj Bhavan event, sources said.
It is also learnt that the state did not approve the budget for the event at Raj Bhavan and now the expenditure is being met from the contingency fund of Raj Bhavan. Sources said earlier budget proposals have also not been considered despite the governor’s office requests.
Sources said the governor will unfurl the flag in Raj Bhavan at 7 am on Thursday and read out her own speech. She would then fly down to Puducherry, where she is officiating as in-charge lieutenant governor, to participate in the official event and come back in the evening to host the ‘At Home’ event here.
“Despite having differences with Kerala governor Arif Mohammad Khan, CM Pinarayi Vijayan has never stopped him from delivering a budget speech. But in Telangana, the governor is not even allowed to give budget speech,” sources said.
Raj Bhavan has invited music composer MM Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose of the Oscar-nominated song ‘Naatu Naatu,’ to the event where they will be felicitated along with others.
Meanwhile, Tamilisai greeted the people on the occasion of Republic Day. “At a time when the country is celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and India’s presidency of G20, it is important for all of us to take forward the spirit of Republic Day,” she said.
